Mandibular Advancement Splints
SomnoMed dental splints provide clinically proven treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
CPAP therapy isn’t always suitable for everyone. About Sleep can assist sufferers of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea with effective treatment alternatives recommended by your treating medical specialist. With referral from your doctor, you can explore the option of using a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) with our qualified dentist, Dr Kosha Jhalla. Dr Jhalla works at SouthSide dental at MorphettVale.
The SomnoMed dental splint is a non-invasive device which is custom made for your mouth and worn during sleep to open the upper airway and reduce collapsibility. This means no more machines, tubes, ties, or other uncomfortable sleeping arrangements. SomnoMed fits over the upper and lower teeth, much like a sports mouth guard. However, unlike a sports mouth guard it is a discreet, precision-made and clinically-tested medical device.
The SomnoMed device allows for full range of mouth opening and closing, which means you can talk or drink with the device in position and close your lips. It does not impinge on tongue space and will fit wholly inside your mouth, making the SomnoDent comfortable and discreet.
Clinically Proven
SomnoMed is a clinically validated treatment for OSA. More than 14 independent studies and over a decade’s worth of research demonstrate the devices’ efficacy and significant clinical benefits:
-
Exceptional levels of patient compliance – 88% of patients reported nightly use of SomnoMed.
-
Treatment efficacy– 91% of patients reported improvement in sleep quality.
-
Acceptance – 96% of patients with OSA stated they would like to continue using SomnoMed.
In 2011, a randomised multicentre trial with 108 patients concluded that treatment of moderate-severe OSA with either CPAP or SomnoMed had similar effects on health outcomes.
SomnoMed MAS treatment has also been shown to have a clinically significant impact in reducing patients’ blood pressure and has been predicted to reduce the risk of stroke. In addition, this blood pressure reduction was apparent in the early morning which is the time of peak risk for acute myocardial infarction.
Treatment Process
Consulting Dentist Dr Kosha Jhalla custom builds SomnoMed appliances. Dr Jhalla is fully trained and accredited by SomnoMed to fit MAS and manage patient therapy. Dr Jhalla has completed a Sleep Dentistry course and has been making dental splints and providing MAS treatment for many years.
The treatment process includes a consultation, examination, and impressions to create a pair of upper and lower custom made splints. After the splint arrives the dentist will explain how to take care of the device and make any adjustments for the perfect fit.

Testimonials
It was excellent and its my new best friend (nicknamed jaws) !
easy to use easy to sleep with, easy to get in and out of, comfortable, non intrusive. It’s at the lowest distance setting and I didn’t snore so hopefully I won’t need to adjust it too much.
Many thanks for putting me onto this option, I really appreciate your support AP Port Adelaide
